Mechanical Problems & Technical ChatIf you've got a problem you just can't figure out, a noise you can't diagnose, or a check engine light that won't go away, ask about it here!
Hello! Been trying to do some research. So many different things I come across and I would like some direct insight.
I bought a 1990 Honda Civic DX 5 Speed Hatchback. Great little car with original 150k miles, AC works, interior in good condition with two minor rust spots.
reason for me being here is that it DOES need a TRANSMISSION. I’ve been to junk yards and I cannot find any from a 88-91 but I did come across a 4 speed. Would it work? And also would it be dumb to go from a 5 to a 4 speed. I honestly would use the car to travel 50 miles a day and 100 round trip so the 4 speed sounds logically better for me because it’s slow and better gas mileage.
so help me out please!!
what other YEAR civic transmissions would work with my 90 civic ef Hatch.
thank you!! Please help me I want to get this little girl back on the road.
It’s just costly. Few places gave me a $1500-$1700 price tag. I figured it’ll be cheaper to find a used working one and replace it. Looks like one of the gear jammed up, doesn’t go into any gear. When it’s supposed to be in neutral acts as if it’s in first or second.
Yesterday I actually came across a 4 and a 5 speed! The 5 speed though is from an 88 which I hear won’t work because it had a different spline count and the 4 speed came out of a 91 civic DX from what the guy told me. I’m from the Reno area. I’m not handy at all mechanically!
