Default 1998 Civic LX - factory alarm disable help

I have a 1998 Civic LX sedan with a dealer-installed (when brand new) keyless entry / alarm system. Today, the keyfobs stopped working after I locked the car and armed the alarm (it's both of them, so it's not the batteries.) I can use the key to get into the car, but the alarm starts blarring and it won't let me start the car. I read on another forum that there is a button between the AM/FM and CD buttons on the radio that you need to hold down to disable the alarm, but this doesn't work. Any thoughts on how to disable the alarm in a manner such that I can still drive the car? Also, what might be the cause of this sudden lack of response from the keyfobs? My Honda has been relatively trouble free for 90k miles, so this is my first post - hopefully I'm providing enough detail. Thanks for any help!
