2000 Honda Civic EX wont rev past 3k
Hello all, new guy from Austin, new to this forum anyway. Looking to do some troubleshooting on this '00 EX. Bought it today for a grand. Its a coupe, auto, 140k miles, nothing special but it sounded like a solid car. Its throwing the P0335 code, guy I bought it from said he replaced the crankshaft position sensor, but it was the one on the bottom of the engine behind the harmonic balancer and dust cover. Well I got home, ran the code, and immediately started researching. Come to find out, as most of you already know, the crankshaft position sensor is in the distributor. So, I cleared the code, went and bought a new one of those from the auto store, stabbed it in, and it started up and idled fine. Then the check engine light came back on, P0335. I havent yet found a detailed thread on this issue occurring past the replacement of the dizzy, so I figured I'd eat some humble pie and ask those who know more about these buggers than I do. Anyone have any input?

Won't rev past 3K is often because the timing belt is out of time. All spark timing is controlled by the sensors in the distributor. The sensor on the crank is just to check if the belt has skipped out of time.
Check spark timing with a light, the test jumper must be in place. If you can't get spark timing to come in near the center of the adjustment range, the belt is probably off by a tooth. Replace belt if it has skipped.
