My friend has a 91 civic with an auto trans that often she can shift into park, but the park light won't come on and she can't turn the car off. It's physically in park and won't move, but it won't turn off until the light comes on. Could this be a faulty/dirty switch in the console? Any help would be appreciated.

 

To me it sounds like a loose/out of adjustment cable in the shifter linkage. I had a similar problem on my caravan and readjustment of the linkage fixed it.

 

My 91 civic has the same prob. I checked the linkage, but that is great. It just takes a while to recognize that it is in park when it is cold out... I wonder if there is something going on within the transmission... Any thoughts?
