Default 93 civic ex,turns off/doesnt turn on

hey everyone.well what happened is,that last night,i was on the freeway, driving normal,i was doing about 65 mph,and all of a sudden,it turns on the check engine light, and the motor just dies.i pull over.put it in park, and try to turn it on...everything works good, the started, the battery's good..you can hear it well, just like a normal start up,but it doesnt turn on,like if theres no fuel getting to the engine?sometimes whe i try to turn it on,you can kinda hear the engine trying to start,a slight "puff puff" and stops.

i keep trying, and it sometimes turns on,for about 1-2 seconds, and turns off.all the lights,stereo,etc..works.then when i finally got it running,i drive away, and it turns off again, the engine just totally dies out.

my dad thinks it might be the distributor,i kind of also think thats it too,or the spark plugs,no spark?he also thinks it might be the intake, says maybe too much air is getting into it?well i took that off and put the original one back on(had to go smog test it anyway, and passed )

then again,i think it might be the fuel pump, for some reason i think it might be that, cause its almost like if fuel isnt getting into it well, thats why it just turns off?

this started last night.

have you guys had this happen or know what it may be?i'd really appreciate any info or help.

heres the info on the car,if this helps:

1993 civic ex coupe
d16z6 soch vtec
136,500 miles
-has no mods,besides catback exhaust.
...................
thanks

Retrieve the CEL code from the ECU as detailed here:

http://www.honda-tech.com/zerothread/1901557

Clear the code and, when the CEL reappears, retrieve it again to ensure it is the same as the first one. Troubleshoot only repeated codes. Post information in this thread to obtain additional advice.

As your 93 Civic is OBD1, it would be easiest to pull the CEL code using the method detailed in the link.

Yes you just jump the plug and watch the light blink. Unless you have a very expensive Honda-specific tool. A regular OBDII scanner is not of any use here.

Could also be the main relay. That will cause symptoms similar to a bad fuel pump, but the CEL will usually stay on steady when you turn the key on but don't crank. Normally the light should come on for 2 seconds and go out in that situation.

thanks guys,i'll look into that CEl thing,i belive my brother in law has something.

me n my dad,we changed the distributor yesterday night(for free),my brother in law came to check out the car too.i tried turning it on,and it didnt want to.he then got some brake cleaner and spraid some into the manifold, and it made it start then.it ran for like 30 seconds, and it died.

my borhter in law says it might be something ith the fuel pump, cause it just dies out like if the gas is being cut or not being injected well.

im gonna drop the car off at the shop where he works at and hes gonna check it out for me.i'll keep you guys posted on whats happening.thanks.
