'93 civic timing adjustment??

I just replaced a head gasket on a friend's '93 Civic DX 1.5L... It's pinging to beat the band under load in the midrange... cooling system was fine so I assume that's why he blew the head gasket to begin with as the head was only out 6 thousandths... Is there any way to adjust the timing on this engine? I am wondering if somebody before him bumped the timing up and that's why it's pinging...

Any help is much appreciated
