Default 93 EX speedometer

I have a problem with my speedometer. Some times it works sometimes it doesn't. When it doesn't work it just fluctuates from 0-50 mph and so i don't know exactly how fast i am going. It happens when its warm and when its cold. I believe its the wiring might be loose but i don't know where the Speedo sensor is. 1993 Civic EX 5-speed. its a d16z6 engine. thanks

Sensor is on top of the transmission in the back of the engine compartment. It is right above where the CV axles go into the transmission.

If CEL is on, check the CEL FIRST!!

If the CEL pertains to the speedo sensor, ding ding ding, it's probably just the sensor located ontop of the transmission.

If CEL is NOT on....
Problem: The speedo doesn't work but the odometer works.
Solution: Replace the cluster or just replace the speedo gauge

Problem: The speedo doesn't work AND the odometer doesn't work.
Solution 1*: Bad Sensor - Replace the speedo sensor in the transmission.
*CEL should be on
Solution 2: Bad Gauge - Replace cluster or just replace the speedo gauge
IF Neither solution above fixed it.
Solution 3: Check all wiring from the sensor to the gauge. Because the signal is disrupted somewhere.

Well the speedometer works but it seems that the sensor m ight be loose or something or i believe the sensor is bad. There is a CEL for the sensor? well its not on What would be cheaper and easier to change? thanks

Well a cluster with a tach goes for 80-100 and a speedo sensor goes for 100-150. I suggest pulling the CEL and letting us know what it is. If the CEL is pretaining to the speedo sensor it's the sensor.

Although, there is a very very very slim chance that the gear inside the transmission that connects the the speedo sensor is bad. Do you hace any friends or family with a 92-95 civic? Ask them nicely if you could borrow there speedo sensor for a lap around the block of something.
