Default 96 HX w/ 226K - good deal?

New to the forum, don't own a civic yet but I belong to a Jeep forum and it has been much help, hoping this forum can do the same...

With that said, I'm looking at buying a 1996 Civic HX for commuting (about 80 miles a day). You probably get a lot of these questions...sorry. It has 226,000 miles on it and needs a new master cylinder. Other than that, it runs better than my g/f's 97 HX w/ 165K on it. It is EXTREMELY clean cosmetically, in and out, and the engine compartment looks clean but not supsicisouly clean. It is stock except for a very subtle exhaust and an aftermarket sound system. Asking $3000 - good deal? I know these HXs are hard to come by, and to find one this clean at this price is pretty rare (at least in my search). My only hangup is the high mileage, and unfortunately dude doesnt have service records...

thanks in advance...

Yeah, I tried to offer him $2500 but he told me he needed the $3000 b/c his parents loaned him that amount for his new car. I'm getting a little desparate, b/c I don't want to spend 6-7K, and I passed up a beautiful 93 VX last summer for a motorcycle, which I have now sold. And along comes this really clean HX, and I'm spending $150 a week!! on gas commuting in my Jeep (15mpg...).

I don't know if the timing belt has been done, belts look relatively new still but dont to push that issue. So that might be another thing, but that could be another thing w/ a lot of civics I've looked at recently.

Thanks so far!

I wouldn't give that much. Yeah, HX's are hard to come by, but rare doesn't mean expensive in this case; especially with over 200K miles. 2500 maybe. If he doesn't like that, find yourself a nice Dx and put some Hx wheels on it.

I have a 97 HX with 242000 plus miles. It runs like a top! 2500 to 3000 would be my range if I were to sell. It depends where you live, because I see Civic prices a lot higher around LA for pieces of junk. If runs and have AC, it worth at least 2000.
