97 Civic LX D16Y7 swap for a Y8
Ive look at 99% of the threads on here and found nothing to answer my questions. I am needing to swap my Y7 with a Y8, I am doing this for two reasons economically and availabilty. I am going to provide all the necessary parts, and I need to know what to buy. I want to keep this car for gas economy only, no frills or modifications. Currently the Y7 has a whole the size of a baseball on the front side of the block, dont ask long story, and all the research ive done, the only thing here locally is a Y8 with 101K on it. It comes with a newly installed hgasket and tbelt. Also comes with AC comp.,Injectors, flywheel, in/exh mainfolds, ABS/ power steering pumps, and altenator. I dont think im forgetting anything.
HEAD SWAP WALKTHROUGH
bottom half should be the same in y7 and y8

Turtle, he is swapping the entire motor, not just the head. Re-read his post, why would he do a head swap when he has a hole in his block. He just wants to make sure everything will be compatible I assume.
Anyways, OP you are doing a D16 to D16 swap, it will be very straight forward. Basically everything will simply bolt in and plug in. If you want vtec to work on the y8, you need a 96-98 y8 (p2p I believe) ECU and you need to wire in vtec. It is like 2-3 wires and there is info floating around everywhere on it.
Let us know if you run into any problems.

Thank you cvcrcr99 for the additional comments, it souns like I should be able to complete this myself. Although I was reading lastnight about how the y5 gets almost 10+mpg better than the y8 and has the vtec-e. Two questions, since im only after the best fuel economy would this be a better fit(if I can find one), secondly whats the diff vtec and vtec-e. Thanks.
The D16Y5 is for the HX model, you will definitely need the corresponding ECU and additional wiring (5 wire o2 sensor for example). The automatic HX's were CVT, if you have a conventional automatic there is no HX equivalent.
So in short it is going to be considerably simpler to install a D16Y8. For daily driving where you care mostly about mpg, the D16Y7 is entirely suitable.

haha sorry about that... I see now...
Anyway the y7 and y8 bottoms should be basically identical from everything i have read so outside of the things involved with the head swap, then engine should drop right on the mounts and the hoses should go right to it!
The only other thing I can think of that you will need is new heater hoses since those are (in my experience) impossible to reuse... And I would stick with y8 since it is a very common swap and known to have minor, if any, problems...
sorry for not fully reading the initial post -_- sometimes my mind wanders...
