98 Civic starting question
The car will click once and then due nothing. I wait a few minutes and it might due it again or will start with no problem. This happens after sitting for a few hours or all night. The battery is new, good connections and will run after removing hot while running. The starter sounds find when it does start so I am kind of fishing.
I think the starter may be going bad. Whack it with a rubber mallet when it won't start to see whether it will now crank. If so, the starter is likely bad. An auto parts store will test it for you if you remove it.
This is indeed typical of the starter wearing out. They click but don't start but eventually might start if you try enough. After a while it will of course degrade to where it never starts.
One test you can do is turn the headlights on when you try to start, if the headlights go out you are losing power from the battery or there is a bad connection somewhere. If the lights stay on but it just clicks, suspect the starter.
