Default 98 will not go/hard shifting

Hello, I have a 98 civic ex. In the last couple of weeks the car started to hesitate/surge around 60 mph when the a/c was on. Kind of jurks like it is not getting gas. Problem went away when a/c off. Now the car will not go, takes a long while to go, with the gas pushed down (a/c off). The car also has high rpms before changing gears and has hard gear changing. Sometimes the car backfires with hard acceleration. I have replaced plugs (oem), plug wires, fuel filter, and distrib. Any help will be great.

Check engine lite is not on. Engine lite came on before plugs/wires replaced for miss firing, do not remember the code. have not had code since parts changed. Also had Throttle valve code, part also changed and no code since then. Had the timing done by mech and had it rechecked again, although it was the same person.

Do you have an auto trans? It sounds like you have shift flares which is an indication of a problem with on the trans solenoids.

Yes it an auto trans. I unplugged the tps and drove it around and the problems are gone. Plugged it back in and problems back. Since Honda rivets the TPS on so I guess I will have to buy the whole Trottle body assm. Any suggestions on how to take the TPS off. What problems will happen if I leave it unplugged for awhile, other than throwing codes?

A TPS sensor could cause some wierd problems. If you have access to a scan tool that shows live data then you can drive around and look for abnormal TPS data. Use the search feature for changing the TPS sensor, i think there is a post floating around on how to change the TPS w/o getting a new TB.

i was throwing codes for that.
think in the manuals it says to drill the screws out.
i cann't remember if it was not available at the parts store - or just too expensive.
a honda shop told me i could get one off of a junk throttle body.
but i left it go and the cel went off - and so i just forgot about it.

Replaced the TPS and worked great for a day. If I turn on the a/c and give the car gas, it just sits there and finally starts to go. Turn the a/c off and give it gas the car starts to go alittle faster. If a/c is on and going up a hill the car loses about 10mph and rpms go up a couple of thousand, and the car starts to gain speed slowly. Any suggestions?

problem was as deserthonda has stated - timing was off.
check that.

or torque converter going out.
think there is noise associated with that though.
