Default 99 civic dx tranny

it's a automatic,133,000 miles. It was running fine. Stopped at a light and it was like it went into neutral.
I could turn it off, start it back up and put it back into gear and it would go for a few minutes. Any clues? What needs to be done?

Is the ATF low?

Is the D4 light blinking on the dash?

Is the CEL ON?

The fluid seemed ok- towards the lower mark on the stick, but still over it.
there is no lights on the dash... I don't think the d4 light was blinking.

You might want to drain the old ATF and replace with new Honda ATF. When you do so, check the old ATF for the presence of metallic debris, which may indicate a more serious problem.

I spoke with a tranny shop- he says it's probably the screen is clogged. $1450 to rebuild.
Does that sound about right? I'm in Dallas Tx.

You may want to try a thorough ATF flush before spending almost $1500. I'd also get a second or even third opinion from other reputable shops.

When you just drain the ATF, a substantial fraction of old ATF remains in the transmission. As I understand it, a flush involves the use of a machine that removes nearly all of the old ATF prior to refilling with new fluid. Alternatively, they may drain and refill several times to accomplish the same goal.

Just don't know how hard to swap em out would be. Or if it would be worth it.

You might want to post these and additional questions in the Transmission & Differential subsection.
