Default 99 Civic dying

I have done some reading on here and I am assuming I have a ignition switch issue but wanted to get some opinions before I replace it. I bought a really nice Civic for my mother in law and the car runs great but today she was driving it down the freeway and it starting running rough and then died. I took a trailer to go pick it up and it would fire up if you hit the key but the second you let off the key it would die. We hauled it home and unloaded it in the shop then tried to start it in my shop and it fired up and ran like a dream no issue at all. Is this a typical issue from the ignition switch going bad? I appreciate any info I dont want my mother in law sitting on the side of the freeway. I mean I am not allowed to leave her on the side of the freeway I guess :-)
