Question 99 civic w/engine light on, sputtering, acceleration is cutting out when driving

Hey my engine light came on a few days ago. I haven't yet read the codes.

The primary problem that started when the light came on was that while driving, the gas would literally stop as if I had the clutch in or as if it was in neutral. The only ways I can fix it when it keeps doing this is too either shift gears, press the gas pedal down to the floor until the gas re-engages, or lightly let up on the gas pedal and the re-press it. The car is still drivable but this could get a lot worse if I don't take care of it. It's happening almost every time I drive it but it does it inconsistently. Sometimes I can drive it for 15-30 minutes with no problems. The other problem that started at the same time is that the engine is almost kind of sputtering when idling.

Any advice appreciated.
Thanks.
