Default Belt slipping when I accelerate

I just got a 97 Civic HX with a CVT transmission. When I accelerate hard (particularly when transmission is in L) the engine belt slips and I can hear it squeek. It goes away after5 seconds or so after Idecelerate. Do any of you know what could be causing this? Maybe I just need to change my belts? (they probably have never been changed before......)

Either a bad belt, or a squeeky pulley. I highly doubt it's your timing (engine) belt though. If that belt slipped as much as you're describing, pistons would have met valves
