will not accelerate

will not accelerate
This is my first post on this forum,so hello and I will appreciate any help I get.
I am looking at a '89 Civic thats for sale. When you start it,the check engine light will come on and it will die if you push on the accelerator. BUT if you accelerate AS SOON AS IT CRANKS and keep the engine raced up and it purrs like a kitten until you let it go back to idle. Then it idles but cant accelerate. The LED code light flashes 8 times repeatedly. Any ideas??
Im a member of the DTR site for Dodge Diesel owners and have received ALOT of help there on my '92 Dodge truck. I'm a firm believer in these forums. Thanks.
