BLOWN?!? help
Hi i have a D16Y8 that is blown i think. It has alot of noise coming from it and i barely made it home. I know its in cylinder one but i dont know if it is a thrown rod or valve or what but I know it sounded like it needed a valve job, like one of the valves were ticking more than it should almost like a knocking sound. I did a valve job on it and it sounded the same. Within one day of driving it it started to get louder and louder. Oh and it would not idle after letting off the gas, but would idle just fine when I first crank it up. It kept shutting off on my way home and finnally died in my driveway where it sits now. What I would like to know is what would cause this and what can i do to fix it and what do i need. should i just buy a new one or upgrade to a b16. I dont have alot of money at the moment but need to get it back on the road asap. Please let me know what would be best to do. thanks, Caleb
www.car-part.com and get a new "used" engine is what I would do. Not sure if you have a stick or auto but there are quite a few motors for the auto VTEC engine. You could get one for 800 it looks like.
^Dunno if that's a spammer or what.
If you had thrown a rod, you'd probably have a hole in your block. Look very closely from all angles and see if you have such a hole. More likely, you've spun a rod bearing and it needs a bottom end rebuild.
Do you have a check engine light?

Not a spammer here.
That website allows you to search local auto salvage yards for parts. If you want it done the fastest and cheapest way then I would suggest you buy a used engine. If you rebuild the motor yourself, you'll need to tear it all apart, then get it machined, dipped, and checked for cracks...etc. Or you can just swap in a used engine. Drain the oil and see if metal comes out. The oil will have a good showing of silver color in it. That's a good indication of bottom end failure somewhere (probably a bearing like the other person said).

... assuming that there is any oil in it to begin with.
Knocking noise from the bottom of the engine that gets worse is going to be a bearing almost for sure. Unless you like dealing with a lot of precision details it is much better to swap the engine out as a unit than try to replace the bearings. You may be able to keep your old head and swap it onto a block from a non-VTEC.

Ok so I took the motor out last night and dont see any holes in the block so I think you right it might be a bearing. I dont have an engine yet but will check out that site if i cant find one locally or cheaper. What would it take to rebuild it because I honestly hate precision details but what would it take to rebuild the bottem end. Ive never rebuilt a moter before so are there any good walk throughs. I figure even if i find another motor Ill still want to rebuild this one. I probably just put a little more time and money into it if I get something to drop in their for now. I guess I just want to know what i can do untill i get another motor, just in case i cant find one. I should probably take off the tranny and put it on the engine stand? then intake manifold, valve cover, and then what? thanks again guys
Go here and download the service manual for that Civic: http://downloads.hondatech.info/Auto...e%20Manual.zip
It has the teardown and rebuild specs. You can read through it at will, but pay attention around page 198. That's the block part.
