Unhappy Burning Oil

Alright so, recently started burnin some oil...I know because I lose about half a court every few weeks or so and you can sometimes see a little bit of smoke comin from the exhaust, so my question is what could be causing it? My assumption is rings but Im really pretty clueless when it comes to this, any suggestions would be nice. If it is rings, how hard would the job be to do it myself and what kind of work would be involved?

Thanks for the responses!

Rings - You have to rebuild the entire bottom end of the motor. It would be better to find a low mileage replacement at that point and swap it in.

-or-

It could be valve seals. Those are located in the head and fairly easy compared to installing new pistons/rings.
