Default Cam, Ye or Ne?

yesterday, I was wondering just for the hell of it, if my vtec was working, I don't have any lights or anything, so I slowly reved up past 4500 while in second just to see if I felt anything at all, can't really say, It pulled through well so I'm guessing it still works....I mean it's a 16 year old car....stuff stops working.....
anyway this wasn't the reason for this post, I think I may want some more power, but I don't want a cheap turbo off ebay, or nitrous etc....from my experience with v8's a cam was the way to go to get the best performance gains....is this true with the d16z6?
I was looking at this cam http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/COMP-...4506.m20.l1116

what do you think, will I get some performance gains without killing gas mileage totally by adding a cam....btw I was thinking the street cam....don't need to deal with idle issues with the strip one

if ever in doubt or if you want to we have a diy vtec light.
you can tap into it right at the ecu, the vtec wire and wire up a 12v light and when vtec kicks in it will light up

my concern wasn't so much that the ecu wasn't emitting the signal to the actuator, it was that the actuator performed the required action after receiving the signal from the ecu....
