Default CEL codes p2a00 p0138 p0171; please help

Hello, I have a 2004 Honda civic 4 cyl manual transmission approx 69,000 miles. I recently replaced the front o2 sensor after getting an error code indicating that it was out. After replacing the sensor, the car runs erratically - surges and then looses power upon acceleration while throwing the error codes indicated in the thread title. After clearing these codes and unplugging the sensor the car runs fine and just gives one error code indicating the circuit is broken (unplugged sensor). Not sure what to do at this point - I noticed some oily build up in the air filter which I'm about to replace. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

What is the first code? Is it a typo in your title?

P2A00 is the airfuel sensor; don't remember the exact description of this code but it is the code that comes up along with the other two.

That's not a recognizable code. It would help to post the actual code. If this code is for the air/fuel sensor, then the replacement O2 sensor or its wiring is bad or damaged.

That is the actual code, I realize its not in the OBDII lists but trust me that's the code. Others have it also: hxxp://forums.nicoclub.com/zerothread/313278 and hxxp://www.hondacarforum.com/honda-3/26721-engine-diagonstic-codes.html(not live links).

You may have damaged the new O2 sensor or its wiring during the installation.

Thank you for the help - I'll see if there is a way to test the new sensor to see if its damaged. I've read elsewhere that this combination of codes may have something to do with an oily MAP sensor and air filter. My air filter is pretty oily but I'm not sure if I've located the MAP sensor correctly. I'll report my findings as soon as I have something conclusive, thanks again for the help RonJ.

If your air filter is oily, definitely replace it. While you are at it, remove the air intake and inspect the throttle body in an attempt to locate the source of oil that is contaminating the air filter. The picture below shows the MAP sensor location on the intake manifold below the throttle body.

The three codes indicate problems with the primary O2 sensor (=air/fuel sensor), the secondary O2 sensor, and a lean running engine. I think that a bad primary O2 sensor or wires could explain all the codes.
