Default Check Engine Light...But bigger problem?

I got a check engine light on my '96 HX. I went to 2 auto parts stores and 3 different shops and had them try and read the codes off of it. They all said that they couldn't get any kind of reading, and the last few places elaborated that the plug had no power going to it, so there was no way to get a reading anyway...What is going on? Any ideas on a fix. Is it possible, and can I just run a 12V wire for power? Or something? Lost! Thx.

P.S. Not very strong when it comes to talking about codes, so be sure to dumb it down for me. Thx again!

there is a 2-wire plug down behind the kickpanel on the passenger side with the ECU plugs. if you get that, and put a wire in connecting the 2 wires, then turn the key to the ON position w/o starting it, then it will blink out a code, the number of long blinks is the first digit, and the fast blinks is the second digit. e.g. bliiiink bliiiink bliiiink blnk blnk blk blnk is code 34. get that code, then let us know what it is. there may be more than one, so watch until it repeats the first one.

I'm deployed right now, but I'll check it when I get home in July. Just didn't know where to go, thanks, Sacicons!

Hey, I figured it out...without doing anything with that 2-wire thing. It was really stupid though...My alternator wasn't charging worth a damn. I had the auto parts store check it and it was putting out something like 10 amps. So got a new alternator and the check engine light has been out since. Thanks for your help Sacc!
