axel bushings. If that's not what it's called it's because it's been a long week of sleeping on a hard wood floor. It's some rubber piece attached to the axel that's worn down. That's generally what causes that noise, especially if the vehicle has higher miles. I have the pleasure of enjoying your very same problem right now. It's not a major issue, but don't let it go on and on. Take it in and see what's up.

I would say it is a CV joint, you can change it yourself. It sounds like the CV joint is gone so you will prolly have to replace the axle. It isn't too hard of a job, but it will require you to lift the car up. You don't need to get it up 6 feet in the air with a hydraulic lift, but you will need to get it on jack stands. Use the seach feature, i'm pretty sure i have a post that tells you how to change the axle but if you have any questions jus ask.

axle is about 100 bucks... and if you can use a air gun it would help on getting the nut off... also your going to either have to take it from the ball joint or maybe the control arm bolts and swing it out of the way... and while your there make sure the axle seal does not leak! and try not to damage it.!! also get a pan and put it under the trans coz sometimes trans fluid will come out of there! my shop charges 175 parts and labor to fix, you might find a shop around your area that has a lift with low enough clearance, or is willing to do it on a jack and stands

thats why i love coil overs on my car. that way i can raise it if i ever need to take it to a shop for whatever reasons and they won't have a problem getting it up on the hydrolic lift.
