BOTH CV axles have to be removed from the trans to do a clutch. Just separate the lower balljoint and disconnect the swaybar end links. Removal of the axle nut on the drivers side is not necessary. This would be a good time to replace BOTH CV axles too (since they are only $50ea and have a lifetime warranty and no extra time involved to install).

This is what I did on my '91 and '95 DX's. It should work on most 2WD models that don't have an intermediate shaft.

Do not take anything apart on the driver's side. All you need to do there is pop the axle loose from the transmission. As you move the tranny to the right to remove it, the left axle is going to just slide out.

On the right side, remove the wheel and take apart the lower ball joint. Pop the axle loose of the transmission and swing the wheel out to pull the axle out. (Be careful not to over-extend the inner CV joint, as it will fall apart inside the boot if you do). You are now ready to remove the transmission, at least as far as the axles are concerned.

There is no need to take either axle nut off unless you're replacing an axle at the same time as the clutch job.
