Default Coil doesn't last long

Since rebuilding the top end of my 1991 Civic 2WD wagon, it has gone through three coils in 13,000 miles. I've heard that excessive plug gap will cause this but checking produces a go at .040 and a no go at .044 so that's not the problem.
The first to die was the Honda OEM, the second was a cheapo off the internet and the last was Autozone's Duralast Gold.
Any suggestions?

Bad wires (open circuit) will stress the coil. Suggest using OEM wires since a lot of the aftermarket ones are crap. It could also be a bad plug. Use NGK conventionals, not any sort of platinum.
