Default Confirming Original Transmission

Hey everyone,

I've in the market for a used Civic for a while now. I have found a 2001 EX that seems to fit my specifications. However, I am aware that there were a significant number of automatic transmission issues with the 2001-2003/4 Civics. I'm wondering if there's any way to confirm that the transmission has been replaced. It's is at 198,800 miles now, so I'd rather not take any chances. I contacted Honda's customer service to see if they would have the associated serial number on record with the VIN number, but they only had the engine serial number, not the transmission. Also, Carfax had no record of any major engine/transmission work (I know that it isn't necessarily complete). Am I out of luck at this point? Thanks for any help.

Look for any paint-pen markings on the transmission, that would show that it is a used unit from a junkyard that was swapped in at some point. Really if you must have an automatic Civic you should look at different years since 2001 seems to have been particularly bad for them.
