Default Crank pulley broken bolt?

I'm about to start my timing belt replacement on my 94 civic si, I'm worried about the crank pulley bolt breaking off where is a good place to get one with out going to the dealer and waiting a few days.....? I don't want to be stuck with a broken bolt and waiting on the dealer thanks

I've never heard of that happening. If it did, you'd have a bigger problem with getting the broken end out of the crank. It's a rather special bolt, you'd have to get one from the dealer or off of a junked engine.

Remember the crank bolt has normal right-hand threads, turn counterclockwise to loosen. And it will be very tight.

ya its a FAT bolt... theres very little chance of you breaking it off BUT if you did youd go thru hell trying to get the bolt out of the crank... probably have to replace the motor if that happens! BUT HIGHLY UNLIKELY!!!!!!!

but if you dont have a good @ss air tool then you probably will have a hell of a time already getting to loose since they are very tight!

I would suggest you go to your local mechanic shop and have them loosen the bolt for you, snug tight it and drive it back to your place for DIY. I had a heavy duty ½ IR impact gun and didn’t do a thing, but using a ¾ inch impact, it came off like butter.

So if you don’t have a ¾ impact, don’t bother to loosen it yourself, I wouldn’t worry about breaking the bolt, but stripping it.

When I went to the U pick n pull junkyard, I had a chain wrench and a 6 point socket on a breaker bar to remove a crank pulley bolt. I bought the chain wrench at Harbor Freight, it had a vise grip handle and a large bicycle chain link to wrap around the crank pulley. I used an old alternator belt so the wrench wouldn't damaged the grooves on the pulley. I also used the wrench to torque down the bolt.

well looks like if that does happen i'm screwed anyway, so I might as well just go ahead and try and break it loose with the impact, if it strips well I guess a new rebuild wouldn't be a bad thing in the long run, just hoping to get more than 167k out of the engine....just want to get it done before talladega, that a 5 hour run up there don't want the belt to snap on the way to the race

I really doubt you will either strip or snap the bolt using an impact wrench.

Don't use a impact wrench to tighten the crank bolt - use a torque wrench.

i always use the impact gun to tighten em... awhole lot easier... just be sure you dont have the gun set really high! mine was set at about 80psi and i never had a problem.
