Default Cranks, Fires then Dies

Help! '94 Civic EX - Engine just stopped running and I got it started again
15min later and drove home. Next day it started fine and then died on the road like the night before. I could not get it started again, had it towed home. When I turn on the ignition and engage the starter it fires up but dies immediately upon disengaging the starter. I'm thinking the alternator. I put in a new coil but that didn't help. I'd appreciate any ideas. Thanks.

When engine won't start:

Listen for whether the fuel pump primes in the rear with the key turned to ON(II). You should hear a low hummming noise for 2 seconds.

Check for spark (click link in my signature).

Do the crank and die thing then check if the oil light on the dash comes back on while it is sitting dead with the key still on. If not, the whole ignition circuit has lost power. That is usually a bad key switch. The ignition gets power in crank (III) but not always in run (II) like it should. Sometimes if you start at off and go to run it will power up, but when you go to crank and then back to run it loses it.
