Default cruise control/speedo issue

here's the problem with my 96 civic SI (Canada).
my speedo only works if I turn on the cruise control button. If I turn it off, speedo will not work, the rpm still does though...
to add injury to insult.... my check engine light is now on.

what the HECK is going with my "reliable" civic?

anyone have any advice?

10 years is pretty "reliable". And I believe the term is "to add insult to your injury". As for your problems, I don't know.

I would go to a shop and have it plugged in an check the code ASAP... Unless the car is running funny I really don't know how you would diagnose it...
