Thanks for all the replies. I put in a new battery and it seems to be doing fine. I still want to figure out what happened though. The battery I had hooked up was one of those expensive yellowtop optima batteries. So I am guessing there must be a short somewhere with my aftermarket speakers. I will try hooking up a VOM meter fglaustin and see if I can figure out anything with that.

How old was the battery? they usually need to be replaced every one or two years.

read where that was not recommended anymore.
with the car running, connect voltmeter to the battery.
should read something like 12.8 to 13 (something).
With the engine running the battery voltage should be around 13.5-15V. If the voltage is under 13 volts while the engine is running them your alternator is not charging the battery. If your speaker system had a short you would be blowing fuses and melting wires. The problem might be that the amp is wired wrong and is drawing current all the time.

bout right - the 5 year batteries that i buy will usually go for bout 4.
and i am one of the very few that only uses distilled water in the battery.

harder to find the distilled water - guess the ladies of this day and age do not use an iron
