Default distributor question

I've got an old 1989 Civic Shuttle 1.4 on which I am replacing the ignition module which is inside the distributor. Can anyone tell me how to remove the spindle & part [cog? - don't know what it's proper name] indicated on the photo? The ignition module sits below the part shown and has to be removed before it can come out. I've removed the 2 screws on the plate above it but this does not affect the cog. How does the damn thing come out?

You are pointing to an important sensor that cannot be removed. The igniter is flat and held in by three screws:

Thanks for the reply, but I don't think that's the same distributor as mine. The ignition module is attached by 2 screws and part of it is a moulded circular ring through which goes the spindle, but it fits inside the cog shaped sensor & can't go past it. I'll take a picture & post to show the ignition module later.

Here's a picture of the ignition module.

I'm not familiar with that type of igniter. Would removal of the brass-colored piece with two screws help?

That's an old mechinical dizzy they quit using on USA models sometime around 1987.

The "cog" (reluctor) just pulls up and slides off the end of the shaft. There is a round spring pin in a slot to give it some friction. You may need to pry, very carefully.

Be sure to put it back on right side out.

Thanks to ron & mk378 for your help.

The reluctor did indeed prise off, with the aid of a 'puller' device, releasing the ignition module. Replacing this seems to have fixed the problem of engine cutting out, & the car is back up & running.

cheers!
