Default Do i need a new clutch?

Got in the car this morning (89 hatch) and it wouldn't go into gear. When i let the clutch out in first the revs lower and the speedo says i'm going around 10km/h when i'm not moving at all. I've never owned a standard so i dont know how to diagnose them. Do i need a new transmition or a new clutch plate?

If the speedometer goes up, the gears in the transmission are turning. The clutch is fine, the transmission likely OK, but power is not reaching the wheels. Probably one of the axles has popped out of the transmission (common if it has recently been worked on), or a CV joint has broken.

Yeah, I just got the cv boots replaced on the left side. So I just take the wheel off and give it a smack?

Look where the axles go into the transmission, if that's what happened you should see one is out further than the other. Also it will probably leak oil.

It's a little more complicated than that, as you need to push the axle back into the transmission. Just hitting the wheel won't do that, the ball joint needs to be taken off first. If you paid someone to work on the axle it's their mistake and they should fix it for you.

I guess so, but if its faster for me to do it myself I will. And it'll save the hassel of paying for a tow

i agree. if the speedometer is moving then your trans is and that means your clutch is engaging if u push in the clutch and it goes back to zero then its un engaging. i would look around your cv axles.

Thank you. This was the excact issue. Took me 15 minutes to fix. I just took the wheel off and backed the that driveshaft nut off about an inch and tapped the end with a hammer, popped in all the way this time.
