draining and filling manual transmisson fluid
I have a 95 Civic Ex, manual trans and was wondering how to drain the transmisson fluid and change it. I read my manual but it didn't say anything about changing the fluid. Is it that hard? Because I called jiffylube and they told me, the price is about $99. I was like man, it can't be that hard. Any tips would be appreciated.
It's real easy, easier than changing your motor oil. You'll want to pick up one of those funnels with the long hose on it, two quarts of Honda MTF, (or synchromesh or 10W30 if you are in a bind but Honda MTF is preferred) and a oil drain pan. Just remove the bottom bolt and drain. Replace the bottom bolt remove the one about halfway up the tranny and insert the hose end of the funnel. Run the funnel up to the top of the engine compartment and dump in the MTF. It's full when you can dip your little finger in and feel the oil level with the bottom of the fill hole. Replace the filler bolt. VOILA!
I'm going to look around and see if anyone has any pictures hosted I can bandwith "borrow" of the D tranny

no love for the Devil on that pic yet...
If I recall correctly, the drain plug is a round head bolt with a 3/8th square drive. You just use a regular 3/8ths ratchet on it. I can't remember but I think the filler is either the same or a 17mm

I think it was 10W40 weight oil for the manual as replacement for the honda mtf.

Ahhh the Manual transmission fluid debate! [8D]
The owners manual for a Civic recommends Honda MTF but also states 10W30 can be used.
An Integras owners manual recommends to only use motor oil if MTF is not availiable and to refill with MTF a.s.a.p.
A lot of Honda drivers swear by the feel that GM Syncromesh gives them. I happen to be one of them and nothing bad has happened to my tranny yetknock wood. If you have a few extra dollars you might want to experiment with this for yourself. See if you like the shift feel synchromesh gives.
To be absolutely safe though, Genuine Honda MTF isn't going to do you wrong .
