Default Engine Confussion

As I've mentioned before I have (or will be getting towards the beginning of next year) a 1991 Honda Civic sedan. I'm going to buy the car from my sister as a project car. My plans are basically to make it a fun-to-drive daily driven ride. I've already have the wheels picked out, brake set-up, and pretty much got the suspension figured out. At least what I want and willing to pay for I mean. I'm also about 85% sure about switching to a manual tranny, but don't know what engine to use. Would like to stay with the D series engine for it is cheaper and all that jazz and this is where I get lost. A friend of mine suggested going with the ZE engine rated at about 130horses (don't know the tq rating). What I'm looking for is a car that is dishing out within the neighborhood of 120-160 horse and ft lbs to the wheels. Wouldn't mind adding NOS but no more then a 50hp shot. I'm building the car on a budget ($5000- $8000) one piece at a time. Will also be doing the body and interior but basically keeping it simple (maybe LED's and a CD player). Any help would be greatly appreciated.
