Default Engine not Staying Alive Honda Civic 2001 vetch 1.7l

hey all
i just replaced my civic engine because the one before had a messed up crank,
i replaced every seal and gasket (except heads) on new engine (only 70 k on).
when i try to start it it will start and then quickly die. i thought fuel pump maybe but it is firing up. it is backfiring a bit as well. does anyone have any ideas?
thanks
Josh
ps: does the order of the spark plug boots matter?
