Default Engine won’t rev past 4000 + check engine light

Got my 2004 1.6 vtec se civic ( manual) about a month ago and my check engine light came on and now whenever I accelerate my car won’t go past 4000 revs. The Car starts jolting/shaking & the revs drop to just below 4000.

I was reading a forum from someone with the same problem but the post is from 2006 so I was wondering if anyone has any definitive answers after 14 years 😂 I don’t mind taking it to mechanic but I’ve found mechanics in my area are pretty useless, thanks guys

Default

have the codes pulled and it will give some more direction on possible problem. off the top of my head i know when on the 6th gen civic it would do something similar if it seen a problem with the vtec system. it would keep the car below vtec rpm until the code was cleared or the next drive cycle.
