When I'm sitting still in the car and shift, it is very smooth. However, when I'm moving and shifting between 1st, 2nd, or 3rd, it feels really rough like matal edges on metal edges. I hear no noise and it still moves into gear easily enough, but it just doesn't feel right.

I purchased this car about 3 weeks ago. It's a 02 civic EX 5 sp.with 98000 mi.

Also, in reverse if the car is moving backwardsit doesn't matter how far I push the clutch down... it just grinds and grinds in the really bad way when I try to put the car into reverse gear. I assume that's not normal.

i have a similar problem, i changed my trany fluid and it felt a little smoother but the shifting was still hard, next ill try checking out and see if the shift linkage is properly placed and change the shifter bushings, u should try the same and see wut happens

I have a similar problem, When my i first start up my car and try to put it in reverse it usually grind like a mother****er, so i gotta sit there pumping the clutch for 5 minutes, and warm up my car, so it idles at like 1k rpm, then i'll try again and it'll be fine. A mechanic told me that it's not a clutch problem, he said my clutch was good, but he said i needed a new slate cylinder, and master cylinder, and change my tranny fluid.

This is on my 2000 Civic DX 5sp
111k miles.

First make sure the clutch fluid reservoir is full and you don't have air in the system. Air can be bled out the bleeder valve on the slave cylinder just like the brakes. If it still doesn't work the master cylinder is going to be the problem. Slave cylinders just leak when they are bad. Course if your slave cylinder leaked and let it get low on fluid and air in the system, that will happen again unless you replace it.

Worst case you could shift into reverse before starting the engine, though I hesitate to suggest that because of course the car is very likely to lurch backwards and could crash.
