Default Fix it, and sell it project!

Ok all -

Here goes. I have a 1996 Honda Civic EX 2 door coupe. Back in the 1996-2000 years I was into all this "hooking up" of imports. I just got my civic and started on the body kit and exterior stuff. Then one thing leads to another and I had all the bolt on crap you could find. Well the bottom line is that I did something stupid. I had just put some new parts on my car one day in 2000. At this time I was badly in need of an oil change but I wasn't thinking about that. More so getting the parts on and testing. So yeah I went out and pushed the engine hard. Low on oil. Stupid Stupid. Needless to say I jacked it up.

After that day it sat in a storage unit for a year. Then in my garage from then until, yes today. I was really busy over the years with work and yup, it's still sitting here. Back then I hadn't a clue about motor internals or what I had done. All I thought was I probably did thousands of $$$ worth of damage. Right now I still am not an expert on internals but at least I have a lot more hours of wrenching than I did back then.

So what's the status today. I have had some time to figure out what’s wrong with the car. My biggest motivation is selling it! So the car starts but no power and a loud rod knock. I dropped the oil pan, and yup I blew a crankshaft bearing on the number 1 cylinder. The shaft and the connecting rod did not look a bit gouged. So I did the simple thing first and order a new bearing for $1 and installed it. started up and seem to run a lot better. I could still hear a softer rod knock. I let the motor run for a little while. The knock got louder. I thought damn maybe another bearing was bad that I didn't notice. I dropped the pan again and nope. It was the same one. Only this time instead of the bearing being disintegrated in the bottom of my oil pan it was just spun, and did some damage to the crankshaft this time. I am simply tired of this crap. I am just looking for the most cost effective way to sell my car. I know I won't get crap for it without a running motor.

I have already pulled all the aftermarket suspension and put the stock back on. Same with the exhaust system, fuel system, pulley’s and cam gear. basically it's almost back to stock except for the body kit and wing which I will just leave on the car when I sell. The body and motor have like 40k miles on it.

The consensus is that dropping a used d16y8 motor in would be the quickest cheapest thing to do. So I guess that is my direction now. Any other suggestion, I'm listening.

I need help finding a motor. I have searched everywhere on the internet but all I can find are half motors (mostly just heads) or remanufactured motors from 1500-2500. I would like to not spend any more than $500.

I am in the DC area. If anyone knows of a d16y8 for sale or any other option for me please let me know. Also my car is a 5 speed if that makes a difference.

I have even thought about parting out the car and selling everything on eBay. But is the money really worth the time? KBB private party value in fair condition is $4605 good is $5145 excellent is $5600. NADA low retail value is $4750 average is $5750 and high is $6525. Ideally I would just like to net $3700-4000 for the car. Or at least as close to it as possible. Obviously I want the most for my time and money I can get. I have had an offer for 1k as is that I turned down. I am talking to someone else trying to work out 2k which I will take, not to have to deal with the car anymore. I don't know how serious he is though.

Thanks for reading.

If all you need is a good running motor, then I would agree with you, a motor swap is in order. Its not too expensive to do-it-yourself.

My friend who has bought 2 jdm (Japan Spec) Integra GSR motors. He bought them on honda motors online HMO and highly recommended buying your motors from there. Some people try to sell their motors, on Ebay and make a few bucks, but you can buy directly from the source basically.

Here is a link to a direct replacement motor to the D16Y8 motor, called the D15B Vtec, same horsepower as the D16Y8 and its Vtec pulls harder, I heard.

It can be bought for only $425 plus shipping, also you would need the P08 ECU (Add $125)

Not bad price for a practically new used Honda motor with a lot of life left. Not too much work, of course you might, but not nessicarily replace the Head/Intake/Exhaust Gasket and the Belts, including Timing belt. Always a smart move to replace the water pump while your replacing the timing belt.

In my opinion that motor would be perfect and would be definately boost the value of your Civic, if you still want to sell the car. Please if you have any questions, dont hesitate. If I cannot answer it, Im sure someone here would.

Best of luck
