Default Fixing the A/C on my 1990 Civic

Since the temperature has been in the upper 90's here in Illinois I'm thinking about fixing the a/c on my civic. When I bought the car a few years ago the Sanden compressor had a leak so the air never worked. I removed the compressor last year thinking I was going to fix it but then never got around to it - so the system has been exposed to the atmosphere for all that time. Looking on ebay it seems I can get a new (rebuilt) compressor and a dryer for about $150. Now I have the following questions; Have I already ruined the system by exposing it to moisture? If I buy a compressor, can I install it and then get an a/c shop to do a evac and recharge? Of course I'm trying to do this on the cheap since the cars not worth too much. Still it would be nice to have a/c again. Thanks.
