Default Fluctuating Cruise Control

Hey guys,

I just bought a 97 Civic EX, and have the following cruise control problems.

When I first set the cruise control, the light on the dash comes on. When I let my foot off the gas pedal, the car slows about 10km/h, and then the cruise finally kicks in, and the car goes back up to the speed where I set the cruise. This ALWAYS happens, no exceptions.

After that, the car seems to be okay, but every once in a while the car will slow to about 10km/h below the speed I set it at, and stay for a while, and then climb back up to the speed that I set it at.

Is this a wheel speed sensor, dirty contacts, and a cruise control controller problem?

Anyone experience anything similar and get it fixed?

Your help is greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Nicholas

Glad you posted this, I have a similar problem. My car (also a 97 EX) does the same when you set the cruise, BUT the odd part is that occasionally it will accelerate to +20km/h over what I set, then suddenly drop back down...it will be fine, then about 2 minutes later it will accelerate up, then drop back down. It only does that when its cold out (below -10C). Again, any ideas? or is it just that Honda's cruise modules are screwy and don't like canadian weather? (mine only drops 10km/h when I first set it)

93 EG8, undershoots when you set. Drops down 3 MPH before, then settles. Delays when you tell it to accelerate, but not when you tell it to decelerate. The manual says check the cable tension on the cruise controller.

I'm not too familiar with the cruise control systems, but I believe it controls the throttle body butterfly valve off a cable hooked up to a vacuum diaphram. If there was a slight leak in the vacuum diaphram i would imagine it could cause a fluctuating speed.

Cool, I'll check both of those things and post back with results.

I'm not exactly sure how to tell if the throttle cable is loose. I can see all the vaccuum hoses, and they look fine, and the throttle cable hooked up to the cruise control module seems alright, but I find it hard to tell if it's loose since I have nothing to compare to.

In the manual, it tells you that the deflection on the wire should be this many mm. Deflection is how far you can push on the wire. It's measured from where it comes out of the cruise control box throttle control thing. LOOK IN YOUR BOOK.

hey, just finally got fed up with this problem on my 99 civic ex...had to look back to find the post.

so, seems to be the exact same prob, fellow canadian here n yes, when it gets below bout -5 C, the cruise decides to fluctuate, mine jumps up bout 10 km/h above what i set it at, then slows, then the process happens again.

just wondering if anyone solved their cruise problem? and how?
