I have never seen that before. Very odd.

Oh wait, I don't think the automatics have an IACV.

hmm that would explain it. I'm guessing its timing. I can live with a slow idle for now but the tranmission is annoying as hell. It isn't slipping or anything it just seems like it takes forever to shift out of first.

My dad's old truck (auto transmission) had a problem with the transmission hesitating to shift. It turned out to be the PCV valve.

In fact, it had a really low idle too, and it was a sloppy idle... felt like it was going to die all the time.

I actually think you might be having the same problem.

Don't blindly adjust the distributor, you should use a timing light.

they only move like 3/8 an inch at the most it wont hurt anything. it will either help or not. just advance it a little and see if it ups your idle.

Before you spend money on the transmission place taking a look at it, I highly suggest replacing the PCV valve first. It only costs a few bucks and is incredibly easy to replace.

Automatics have an IACV, but it's on the bottom of the throttle body not the back. It's a different type of valve (the so called "3 wire IACV") but I would imagine it can still get dirty and cause idle speed problems.

I agree with replacing the PCV valve and not blindly adjusting the timing.

Check the cable from the throttle to the transmission if it has one. The purpose of this cable is to cause delayed shifting (stays in low gears at higher mph) when the throttle is wide open. If not working right you could have delayed shifting all the time.
