Default RE: heater core replacement

just a added note as to my progress. The honda has been sitting up until now. I finally got up enough courage to try this heater core replacement thing. Yes I used 2 screw clamps for the new hoses. As for the history on this car....All the hoses were rotted and bad. If I pulled on any of them, you could hear the crackling. The previous owner had little antifreeze in it, which is why the radiator cracked at the top. What I had was rust water. I cant imagine that did the heater core any good.

Default RE: heater core replacement

I have replaced the heater core in my 95 DX. Same set-up as yours. I followed the instructions in the Haynes manual and did it by myself without too much trouble. Just keep good track of all your parts, bolts, clips and everything. I can give you a little advice on the process from my experience with it.... In the manuals it says you need to remove the A/C evaporator which means disconnecting the A/C lines. You don't need to. The plastic heater core enclosure as well as the A/C enclosure are flexible enough to pry the heater box out without removing the A/C stuff at all. The other thing it said was to remove the seats. I didn't take the seats out and itwasn't an issue. Last thing. Buy a quality heater core. As much trouble as this replacement is, you don't want to do it again any time soon. When you have the dash out is also an excellent time to clean. Behind the air vents and all the little places you can't normally get to. Hope this helps.

ok I have the dash raised somewhat. and I think I am looking at the heater core but not sure. I gently pryed the black box to one side. (the one that was right behind the glove box). I think the core is in the box behind the radio. Any tricks to removing the box?
.........since my last post got deleted earlier today ........heres the condition of car...........it had really bad hoses every where and coolant was rust water so I have flushed it out several times......I want the core replaced anyway just so I know I have a good one in there.......I just cant quite figure out how to get it out yet............these book pictures are sooo crappy. I now see the pipes of the core coming out the bottom of the box and they are dry. the coolant is coming out of the bottom of the box to the right of the core..............sooooo if the pipes are dry then it has to be the core. I just gotta figure out whats holding the dash on the drivers side. Either I gotta remove the steering column adn more **** to free the dash or I dont know

im newer to the site and alot of these guys will probly disagree with this but, if you dont need the heater you can bypass the core all together. or its a good temp fix.
just connect one hose to bolth of the tubes going into the dash, or if you need a conversion kit they are sold at most auto parts stores.
also if your hesitant to take your baby apart due to lack of experience in that department, go to a junk yard and rip apart of bunch of dashes to get the hang of it. no obligation to put them back together iether

Take the cluster out and I think there are bolts behind it, as well as one on the end just like the right side has. Also take the nuts off from the bottom and lower the steering column to the floor. It may be easier to go ahead and remove the front seats to have more room. Then take the dash completely out of the car. The heater core is in the box in the center of the car. Take that box out of the car to remove the core. It has a couple of bolts near the top and also you have to take a nut off from the firewall side near where the hoses connect.

heater core is now out..I did exactly what the last post said. Old heater core is green around the bottom of it and where the cores are attatched to the bottom tank.......so it must be a pin hole leak. The pipes were dry all the way to the hoses

The hoses I bought were the cheap ones. They fit snug like the old hoses. If the hoses were leaking then I would have found coolant drips at the hose too........and they were bone dry......anyway the new core went in the box but the pipes were touching before I put it in the box so I had to spread them apart to get the approximately 1/2 an inch between them gap. So now its put it all back together time. I hope this 80 bucker core from advance auto is good enough..........the only other quality core I could get is from napa and it looks exactlky like the core I bought, only they want 134 for it

Heater core is back in. Almost done buttoning up dash.........If you guys are finding that the hoses are a little loose, are you using 3/4 or 5/8 hose?
I threw out the cheap **** and bought the red hose 5/8. used it for all the heater hoses. Just stuck the end of a 3/8 extension inside to stretch it a little in combination with dish soap makes the hose go on the core just fine. I didnt buy the preformed hoses, I just used longer hoses. I still have to flush out the system cause I used pepper to stop the leak. Annddddd.... this time since I dissconnected the battery, for over 30 minutes, lmao (more like 2 weeks) I didnt trigger an airbag code. yeppers, never dissconnect an airbag with the battery still connected.
