Default Heater problem...

So, it's like 28 degrees outside this morning and I go out and start my car to get it warmed up for my drive to work... well 15 minutes later I get in and it's freezing inside, heat's on and blowing ice cold, temp guage is dead on in the middle where it always sits...

I didn't have time to mess with it right then so I went on to work, which was fun because the defrost didn't work either... well when I got there my partner wasn't there yet so I popped my hood to have a look while I waited for him...

I noticed that one of my heater hoses was cold, and the other one with the heater valve was hot before the valve and cold after... so I started messing with the valve, moved the lever to the other position, which I now know is open, and low and behold I got heat... so for some reason the heater valve isn't moving when I put the selector on heat... what is the other end of the cable hooked to in the dash, and how do I get the panel out to see where it is broke???

If it's going to be to much to fix it I'll just take the valve out and put a coupler in there. how bad would that hurt the A/C performance in the summer time though?

It's a 93 DX 4dr.
Thanks.

The first two pictures show that the cable connects the valve directly to the heater lever on the dash. If the problem is not due to cable disconnection on the valve side, then cable disconnection likely occurred at the heater control panel, removal of which is described in the third picture. All in all, the job looks pretty straightforward.

That mechanism in the second picture is mounted right on the bottom of the heater box under the dash. While you're on your back looking up at it, move the temperature lever and see if the lever driving the other cable moves.

It's OK to just leave the valve open all winter, when it is time to use the A/C again, close it.

thanks guys.

I just wanted to make sure it wasn't connected to something electronic that was going to be either hard to find or really expensive... and I couldn't figure out how it came out... of course I didn't take my cdplayer out either, so that explains that...

I'll check it out this evening, and post my findings.
