Default heating dash not working

i drive a 1996 dx hatch and all the heating components on the center doesn't work at all. the deck above all the buttons work, and by moving the temperature lever left and right, i can control the temperature of the very tiny amount of air that always moves through the system, but none of the buttons light up or turn on when i press them. i want to fix this problem before winter rolls in so i will have heat

any tips to fix this electrical problem, or will i have to buy a current tester thingy and use my helms manual to pull apart the whole entire front dash to find out where the problem is? is there any fuses or wires that i can check just by taking off the dash under the steering wheel, cuz i know how to take that off really easily???
