Default Help, pinging and dying

I have a 96 civic hatch d16y7. It pings when under a load (ie, when I go up a hill or accelerate). It does not ping if I just rev the engine. Lately after I get off the freeway in the morning it has been dying when I stop. It starts right back up, but it has still been running a little rough. I checked the timing and it was perfect. Also, I have put on a new cap, rotor, and new plugs. I am thinking of changing the wires too, but they still look pretty good. Is it possible that the valves need adjusted, or is a sensor going bad. Any ideas would greatly be appreciated.

when i hear the word "ping" - usually is what is used to describe that a higher octane should be used. all honda civics are 4 cylinders ??
might try the next level of octane ??
