Default pinging in the engine

hey guys,
ive got a 94 ex, for the past little while ive had this pinging noise in the engine (especially at low RPM's or while going uphill) and it feels like it has less power than usual. I've tried higher octane gas and it didnt help much...have any of you had this problem? or does anyone have any suggestions as to what i hould to??

Get the valves adjusted and the timing set. You'll notice a difference.

yes i agree... sounds like pre-ignition.. caused prolly by over advanced timing... back it down a few degrees and see if it makes a differene...

what octane fuel are you running? and has the cylinder head ever been shaved?

is adjusting the valves a job i should leave to a garage or is it something i can do myself?...im running on 87octane, Ive used 94 and the pinging and knocking was reduced but still lingering in the backround...the cylinder head has never been shaved, what would that do?
Thanks for your help guys.

if at one time the head was shaved this would have increased the compression ratio and caused pre-ignition with low octane fuel...
