Honda 98 Civic transmission control system manfuction
Hello,I hope someone can help me. I have a 98 civic that has been giving me the following problems. The speedometer works whenever it wants and the transmission tends to jump/slip sometimes, when I go in reverse and when I try to drive. Today i took it to a regular garage and they told me when they hooked it up to the machine it said "transmission control system malfuction Honda Part 0700" The chek engine light also recently went on.
Can anyone shed some light on this problem? What is causing this? Are the speedometer and the slip/jump related? What do i need to do to fix this? How much should the part cost and labor?
Thanks for your help in advance.

Retrieve the CEL codes yourself as described at the link in my signature. Post the codes in this thread for more feedback.
Have you checked whether the AT fluid is low?

0700 is a generic AT trouble code (not informative). Retrieve the specific AT trouble code similar to a CEL code (see below). Again, post codes for more feedback.

The mechanic today reset the light. I have to wait until it comes back on? So transmission control system malfuctionis too generic to narrow it down as well? Thanks for the input.

The mechanic knows the specific AT trouble codes, but did not share them with you:

The vehicle spped sensor (VSS) needs to be working for the transmission control to know how fast the car is going and shift the gears accordingly. The VSS also drives the speedometer. A non-working speedometer doesn't necessarily absolutely mean a bad VSS though. Further troubleshooting would be needed before replacing the VSS because it is kind of expensive.
I don't think it would cause a problem with reverse though.
