Default Honda Engine Coolant - Necessary?

Forgive me if this has been covered somewhere, but I did a search and couldn't find the answer right away.

In the manual for my 1995 Civic EX it says to only use Honda Engine Coolant. Even if the coolant says it is safe for aluminum, don't use it because it might damage the radiator.

Honda hype, or Important truth?

Thanks in advance.

Peak I think makes a formula that is safe for all types. It's yellow in color so you can mix it with Red OE (toyota) Orange (GM Dexcool) or bluish green (Honda late).

Besides there's only two factories that make coolant in North America. If you want to be absolutely certain use a good brand name like Peak or Prestone but they are mostly the same.

Just don't mix Dexcool with regular coolants or PolyPropylene based coolants(Sierra) with regular.

I have heard a rumor that Dexcool will destroy the seals on your radiator tanks. i don't know how true that is though. I don't wanna find out first hand

100% true --dexcool eats up rubber & plastic -- ask anyone that ownes a gm with a 3.1/3.4/3.8 motor --it eats up intake gaskets like crazy ![:@]

So consensus is that Prestone or Peak will work as good as 'Honda Brand' coolant?

Any special type? Or just the 'regular' kind?

Sorry to be so totally ignorant.

Honda is probably the best, but the tiny advantage it will have over the other big names isnt worth the money. go with the Prestone or whatever. just as long as its the green, not the orange.
