Default How to get in neutral when the clutch is out

So the clutch went completely out and had to get the car towed. But the clutch would stick to the bottom and I couldnt put it into neutral. I was stuck in reverse so they had to tow it the other way costing more. Its already done so I was just wondering if there was a way I could have put the car in neutral without the clutch.

Another question. They said there was a knocking noise that goes away after it picks up speed. I notice it too but never thought anything of it. I cant remember what they said it was. It still does that and Im wondering if its anything serious.

You should just be able to push the shift lever to neutral with the engine stopped. If it's on a hill you may need to push the car uphill slightly or jack one of the front wheels off of the ground to relieve the strain on the gears.
