First check the level of brake fluid. If you stop normally but then the pedal sinks down, master cylinder is bad or there's a leak. Does the hand brake work properly? If not, rear brakes probably aren't adjusting themselves like they should. This will cause the brake pedal to travel further than normal.

To check disk brake pads remove the wheel and look through the inspection slot. Worn out pads won't cause "sloppy" brakes though. When they are finally completely gone you will still stop but there will be very loud noise from metal to metal contact.
