As mentioned, does the CEL stay ON on the dash?

When was the last basic tune up done (i.e., replace plugs, wires, distributor cap, and rotor)?

usually basic tune up related problems develop over time, unless something triggered it (in a bad way). so more information is required. did you notice when it happened and how you were driving or if there was a sound of some type of mechanical failure?

There are lots of reasons for a sudden loss of performance. One common possibility is the timing belt skipping a tooth. Check the cam timing. If it is out of time, do not run the car any more before putting a new timing belt on. You risk severe engine damage if you do.

To check the cam timing on a SOHC engine, remove the bolts that hold the upper plastic timing belt cover on. Loosen the nuts on the valve cover and pull out the spark plug wires so you can lift the valve cover enough to unhook it from over the timing belt cover. Remove the timing belt cover. Rotate the engine (counterclockwise) by hand with a socket on the crank pulley bolt (the big pulley on the bottom of the engine) to TDC. This is when the single notch on the pulley lines up with the pointer on the lower plastic cover.

Now look at the cam pulley which is under the cover you removed. The word "UP" should be at the top. If not, rotate the engine exactly one revolution more so it is. The two little marks that are about 90 degrees away from the word "UP" should be even with the edge of the top of the head. If it's more than one tooth width away from that point, that's your problem.
